Teahouse Treks
Light weight Trekking
For Individuals and Small Parties, teahouse treks are perfect. One or two people traveling alone find teahouses homey and comfortable.
For Budget Travlers a teahouse trek gets you into the mountains at lowest cost. Trekking with just a guide and porters, you travel light and inexpensively.
For Meeting Lots of People, teahouses are great. Each is run by a Nepali family; and you, the family, other trekkers, and guides take your meals in the teahouses' main halls.
What's a Teahouse Trek?
Teahouse treks offer a lightweight trekking experience. Unlike a tented trek, where you travel with a full camp, kitchen, and crew, in a teahouse trek you and a guide travel with only enough porters for your duffels or backpacks.
In many trekking areas, local entrepreneurs have set up village inns, often called teahouses because the oldest of them started as tea shops where travelers could sleep on the floor. They are much nicer now! With the exception of a few high altitude stops, teahouses are comfortable and spacious. You will have your own (double) room which you can lock with a padlock. There are wooden platform beds with foam mattresses in the rooms.
Every teahouse has a common room with a stove or fireplace, benches and tables, and lanterns or sometimes electric lights. From the kitchen the Nepali propritors serve an amazing variety of tasty, nutritious food prepared from local ingredients and staples from Kathmandu. You can eat a vegetarian diet, but there are always meat dishes available. Save room for desert, as teahouses vie to outdo each other with pies and other surprises.
When you travel with us on a teahouse trek, all lodging and food are included. You have open choice from the menu for meals and snacks. Your guide and porters are paid for, and all transportation to and from Kathmandu is included too. Trekking permits, national park fees, and all details are covered.
You may want to bring some pocket money along for small souvenirs or for soft and hard drinks. Most teahouses sell both, and you will see heavily laden porters carrying cases of Coke and beer to high altitude teahouses along many trails!
Most treks in the Everest and Annapurna regions and in Langtang can be done as teahouse treks.
A Teahouse trek can depart any day. But flight reservations are very tight during the season, so please make your arrangements as far in advance as possible.
